Friday 6-pack 6/27

DOWNLOAD: Friday 6/27 6-pack o'mp3s.zip

A little retro-tinged 6 pack, as we near the halfway point of the year. Functionality note: I added the AlbumArtist field and labeled it as Friday 6-pack. Hopefully, that'll make organizing in iTunes a little easier.

Fascination – Alphabeat
80s bopness, bopitude, bopacity. If the Fresh Prince of Bel Air had been the Fresh Prince of Silver Lake, this would’ve been the perfect Carleton dance song.

When the Child Awakes – Mount Righteous
Somewhere between The Polyphonic Spree and a Texas HS marching band as led by that really cool camp counselor with the cool taste in music – the one who wouldn’t bust you for sneaking out of your cabin at night to go make out with the girls at Camp Minnehaha. I’m looking forward to putting this on the iShuffle and walking down the boardwalk and seeing what happens. The answer may be: getting laughed at.

Can I Kick It? - A Tribe Called Quest
Where best to kick it? In a jeep, on the beach, in the summertime, at a house party.

Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? - She and Him
I was all set to write about how much I liked Rilo Kiley and how this new song of theirs in particular was great and that I was really hoping they would stay together and record another album someday. But then I double-checked the name of the artist, and was able to confirm what we’ve always known: I’m a jackass. Still, a good song in a 70s kinda way. Kudos to Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward anyhow.

The Boy with the Thorn in His Side – The Smiths
Just because.

It’s the End of the World as We Know It (acoustic) - R.E.M.
Just because out of 8000 songs on the iTunes, it randomly popped up while I was trying to fill out the 6 pack.

Hands in the Air – Girl Talk
Expressly because it succesfully marries ‘Whoomp! There it is!” with ‘In a Big Country’. Brilliance is as brilliance does Sr. Girl Talk.

Verve reunion album aka BOOOOIIINNG!

Video kicks in about at :45.

Pitchfork: The Verve Unveil Reunion Album Details: "The Verve Unveil Reunion Album Details
The Verve will consummate the reunion they started last year with the release of their fourth album. The record is titled Forth, and according to a Billboard.com report, it comes out internationally August 18 via EMI and August 19 in North America via the band's On Our Own imprint with distribution from MRI/Megaforce/RED.

Forth's first single, 'Love Is Noise', has already hit the Forkcast, and you can hear it via the link below.

As if an 11-year wait for the follow-up to Urban Hymns wasn't enough, the Verve will build more anticipation for Forth with a world tour of summer festivals."

Solstice 6-pack

DOWNLOAD: Solstice Friday 6-pack.zip

Happy Solstice everybody. And a big 'SoCal's loss is Seattle's gain' to Lindsay. You'll be missed.

The Virgins - 'Rich Girl'
A slightly funked-up, discofied Strokes single, if Sr. Casablancas could sing in a cool-ass falsetto.

What Made Milwaukee Famous - 'The Middle of the Night'
Wayne Campbell: So, do you come to Milwaukee often?
Alice Cooper: Well, I'm a regular visitor here, but Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers began visiting here in the late 16th century.
Pete: Hey, isn't "Milwaukee" an Indian name?
Alice Cooper: Yes, Pete, it is. In fact , it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land."
Wayne Campbell: I was not aware of that.
Me: An acoustic strummer. A campfire song for all the campers at Young Romantics camp to sing along to.

The BPA f. David Byrne & Dizzee Rascal - 'Toe Jam'
Fatboy Slim under his new moniker (Brighton Port Authority for those of you who are sick and tired of acronyms. If you are, LMK.) You've got to go see the nudist video for this track. A sorta semi-ska infected summer jam. Great for driving with the top down on the longest day of the year. Make those extra minutes count, y'know?

Thom Yorke - 'Eraser XXXchange mix'
Pretty damn cool. Takes the originals blip noises and inverts them into the best Pong game you've ever played.

Girl Talk - 'Set It Off'
Sample-mania. Too original to truly be called a mash-up, includes snippets of Radiohead, Jay-Z, 'Come on Eileen', 'Real Love' and a host of others.

Bon Iver - For Emma
Just gorgeous. Plaintive. You've got to check out their version of this for the takeaway show. Would be perfect for driving your convertible through the shortest of the night of the year, chasing after a love you don't wish to lose.

Muppets - Moving Right Along
They're making a new Muppets movie. They better not mess this song up.

Bon Iver - La Blogotheque

Simply stunning. Love the accapella thing they have going here. Haunting and beautiful and emotional and transcendant and everything a great song can and should be.

Bon Iver will be at the Outside Lands fest in SF and the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. Come and join the rapture at both.

crosswalk countdown: GuerilLA

Crosswalk Countdown - GuerilLA from Kelly Herrington on Vimeo.

Butter Van House and I all participated in this. It's Butter's bald spot at the beginning, Christy jumping multiple times, and me at around :58 in a turquoise shirt.

Tracklisting:

Campus – Rostam Batmanglij
I know absolutely nothing about this artist and I’m too lazy to go to Wikipedia and look her (or him? see?) up. However, cool strings-as-the-hook style.

Murder (Or a Heart Attack) - Old ‘97s
Dog love lost.

Your Adorable Beast – Bobby Bare Jr.
Possibly about love. More likely just a straight up song about a dog. How has this not ended up in a Pedigree spot?

Rumors – Timex Social Club
1986 synths, 1986 rhymes.

Soul on Fire – Spiritualized
Jason Spacman/Pierce developed double pneumonia and nearly died. He ended up making some beautiful music.

How Lucky We Are – Meiko
Local LA girl Meiko will be playing th Hotel Café the next 3 Thursdays. Really winning personality over acoustic guitar.

Sugar on My Tongue – Talking Heads
(hat tip to Monica) - It’s the Talking Heads. That’s enough excuse to make it a baker’s 6-pack this Friday.

Have a good weekend.

Friday 6-pack

tracklisting

Love Tape (mash-up) - The Pinker Tones
Deserves its own post in the 'Songs that should be in your commmercial' category. boppin' horns and insanely, insanely catchy.

Viva la Vida – Coldplay
*IS* in a commercial. And I like 'em anyways. Reminds me of the days when I used to live in Santa Cruz in a beach house and sip Port whilst watching the ocean and writing DEEP things.

Willie and the Hand-Jive – Bo Diddley (HT: Geoff Rogers, God.)
RIP, Bo. Get those angels stomping their feet on the white and fluffy.

Gobbledigook – Sigur Ros
Nudist video available on the Intertubes, if you look hard enough. Strangely anthemic and uplifiting.

Jammerin’ - the A-Team
Murdock & Face & Hannibal & B.A.

A Design for Life – Manic Street Preachers
old indie goodness. for Amy from group. I hope you can find some peace.

Hey Girl - Delays
it mystifies me that this song wasn't a huge indie smash along the lines of 'There She Goes' by the La's. not that i want to see this rerecorded by a girl group and used for a feminine products commercial, but still, this should be huge.
